In addition to practicing Family Law and being the senior partner at my law firm, I am an author, and the founder of It’s Over Easy, the online divorce service. I’m the parent of two awesome kids. Their dads and I share custody, and so far, we all feel that we are doing pretty well.
I have been a Divorce Attorney, for over 20 years. My profession and experience going through my own divorce have taught me a thing or two about navigating child custody, support, and division of assets.
We believe that agreements made between couples are much better than letting a judge, who doesn’t know you or your children, make decisions about big-ticket life issues. At my firm, most of our clients are wealthy and/or famous. The number of zeros on their bank account balances may be different than the average person, but the fear, anger, and sadness that come with divorce are the same.
Over the years, countless friends and clients have said to me, “If I only knew then what I know now…” long after their divorce was final, and they have gone on to relate how the wisdom of their experience could have saved them heartache, aggravation, and money.
Not enough progress has been made to develop techniques for effective resolution between couples in the event of divorce. Ensuring that the divorce process goes smoothly should not rely upon personal experience. In that case, we would only know how to approach divorce the second time around, and one divorce per lifetime is quite enough for one person to handle. So, how can we change the perception and traditional approach to divorce to lay a foundation for more amicable, straightforward, and effective techniques for resolution at the end of a marriage?
I truly believe that in this day and age, divorcing couples (or unmarried parents in custody disputes) are generally capable of working out many of their issues on their own. Many are trying, whether it is by virtue of mediation, collaborative practice, counseling, or some combination of legal guidance through an admittedly archaic and complicated system while having to communicate directly as opposed to through an expensive attorney. An evolution is taking place; the evolution of dissolution.
My experience working in Family Law has made me painfully aware of how little most people know about what they’re agreeing to legally when they get married. Subsequently, most people have no idea what to expect in the divorce process, and they’re terrified. In order to change the way we think about and approach divorce, in 2013, I wrote a book called, It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way – How to Divorce Without Destroying Your Family or Bankrupting Yourself. The book provides helpful hints on modern dissolution, taking into account the hurdles faced by couples who want to separate their households and finances in a civil and cost-effective way. I wrote it in an effort to extend my knowledge about divorce to the broader public, especially anyone considering divorce without the means to work with a divorce attorney.
When I first started working as a divorce lawyer, I went to work at my dad’s firm. He knew what he was doing. Not only had he and my mom had the most respectful divorce ever, but they also resolved their financial issues, worked effectively as co-parents, and they remain friends to this day. Our firm has always promoted settlement-oriented resolution, no matter the circumstances. In some ways, divorce is a great equalizer. Unless you have already been through it, you are unfamiliar with the process and the standard laws, which is frustrating, and at times, very scary.
Naturally, after writing a book about divorce, the next step on my Family Law journey was to develop a streamlined, online solution to simplify the divorce process. It’s Over Easy is a website that allows like-minded couples to separate and divorce from the comfort of their living rooms. Our team has developed an intuitive and simple process for uncontested divorces available to everyone. The platform is uncomplicated and allows you to move at your own pace. We launched in 2018, and feedback from customers about the user experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
In addition to our divorce platform, we also offer child custody and co-parenting tools to assist with communication and creation of shared custody schedules. Our balance sheet programs will explain property allocation, and we have created technology to assist with the determination of the appropriate amounts of child and spousal support. If you hit a roadblock on any of the issues, It’s Over Easy offers live chat with a Divorce Coach or can direct you to financial advisors and mental health professionals who can help.
We also offer a panoply of entertaining, informative articles and compelling interviews on the It’s Over Easy Insights Blog and our podcast Divorce Sucks with Laura Wasser. Our blog features articles written by professionals and actual people who have gone through the experience. On our podcast, I interview celebrities, experts and everyday people about their experiences breaking up, getting divorced and moving on to their next chapters. We offer tools and suggestions of ways to “think outside of the box” and avoid costly litigation.
We also take the idea of community very seriously, which is why we created The Index. The Index provides resources and support unique to what our users might need when going through a divorce and the curated directory includes everything from fiscal planners, real estate agents, and mental health practitioners, to a great blow-dry, dating apps, massage therapists, and meditation classes. We believe that the process of recovery, renewal, and reinvention requires support in many forms. For example, we support the ideas of community, planning ahead and high-quality service. Our relationship with Worthy and other empowering organizations are vital to our village.
We have amassed a universe online and across social @itsovereay that is rich with information, services and curated professionals for all your new chapter lifestyle needs. We are a resource, not just fitting for divorce, but for all relationship-life stages. Simply put, It’s Over Easy gives people going through what is absolutely NOT an easy life experience the ability to be the masters of their own destiny and move through to the next stage of their lives more simply and inexpensively.
