Girl's Best Friend

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend but really, that’s so materialistic and cliché. What does a diamond do anyway? Other than shine and sparkle, it doesn’t pay your bills, give you a raise, hug you, compliment you or tell you how amazing you are. At the end of the day, it’s just a pretty object. And speaking of pretty objects, if you’re still holding onto your engagement ring or wedding ring with the hopes of passing it on one day if you’re divorced, that thing is just bad mojo.

Sell it.

But moving on now to what 6 things are a girl’s best friend. Are you ready? Buckle up.

1. Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is a girl’s best friend. Having a strong conviction that you deserve the best and knowing how valuable you are is the best asset a girl can have. Ever.

It’s not love. It’s not money. It’s not a career.

It’s the deep conviction that you are so valuable and matter that will bring you through every bad day and every tough challenge in your life.

2. Friends

Friends. Ladies gotta have more friends than shoes.

Gulp.

I’m proud to say I do have more friends than shoes but, I’d love to have more shoes, too.

The company you keep says a lot about who you are, where you are going and where you have been. The company you keep can bring you down or lift you up.

Whether it’s one, two or four great friends, if you’ve got them, rejoice! Friendship is so valuable. It makes our lives better and happier. As women, we need the comradarie and companionship. The circle of friends that surround us and empower us. So, choose your friends wisely and never take them for granted. They aren’t blood, so they don’t have to stick around for just anything and anyone. Appreciate them and nourish those relationships. They benefit your mental and physical health greatly!

3. Instinct & Courage

Okay, so those are two things technically, but they work together.

A woman’s instinct isn’t good if she doesn’t have the courage to act on it.

When you have that gut feeling and the strength to follow through, you are unstoppable. These two things are your best friends because often, women doubt themselves, hold back and make choices based on societal approval. They want to please. There’s nothing wrong with pleasing sometimes but, not at the expense of being stressed and unhappy.

When women believe in our own convictions, have self-esteem and the courage to go for what our hearts and heads are telling us, we’re unstoppable.

So, the more you believe in that small voice that talks to you, the stronger you will be.

When you have that gut feeling and the strength to follow through, you are unstoppable.

4. Financial Education

Historically, financial talk has been directed towards men, but the conversation is changing. More and more women are breadwinners, in the workforce and taking control of their finances as either single women and mothers, or in a married/long-term partnership.

Knowing how to manage your money, especially for single mothers like myself is crucial.

I wasn’t really taught how to save, consider stocks or retirement or handle credit. I learned a lot of lessons the hard way, but I think after a few setbacks after divorce, I am rebuilding and doing the best with what I have.

Financial education means you can make decisions that can positively impact your present and future, as well as your child’s/children’s present and future. Relying on a partner is a thing of the past. You can want to remarry or partner up, but you need to know how to handle your money. Period.

5. Patience

Oh my, do I struggle with this one!

Patience is a virtue that all women need.

We need to be patient with our children. To understand their own limitations.

We need to be patient with ourselves. To know that as single moms, we don’t need to be Wonder Woman. We don’t need to be mom and dad. We just need to be our best selves.

We need to be patient when dating again. To know that the right person comes at the right time. That if we settle, we are losing and so are our kids. That if we push, we could ruin something good.

We need to be patient and hopeful. Hopeful that even when a door is slammed shut that another will open.

6. Family

Whether you have just one close family member or fifty, having a blood or adopted/blended family relative that genuinely appreciates you and understands your life history and path is such a blessing. From your children to a favorite aunt, a close family member can really be a shelter in the storm. They share so much with you that having these people in your life really is a joy to be treasured.

So as you see, these aren’t exactly “things” that are our best advisors and friends, but loved ones and beliefs/traits that can carry us to greatness. That can help us when we are troubled and lift us to shine our lights when we are strong. That can make us be the best versions of ourselves, even if we are always “under construction.”
