“As full of spirit as the month of May, and as gorgeous as the sun in Midsummer.”
William Shakespeare, Henry IV
We certainly saw some items up for auction this month that fit old Will’s description of the month of May. And as we head into summer and, hopefully, an end to these tough times, we thought we’d share some of our favorite pieces from May’s auctions both to ogle and uplift.
One of the first pieces to catch our fancy in May was the Panerai Luminor Blackseal (#4 below). This watch is unique as it features a brushed stainless steel cover with an etching depicting two divers straddling a torpedo (you can see the etching here). This is a nod to the Italian brand Panerai’s history as a supplier of timepieces to the Italian navy during the First and Second World Wars. To think that so much can go into a watch alone! It’s no wonder it sold so successfully at auction.
There is also the yellow gold ‘Happy Diamonds’ set of a necklace and earrings from Chopard that we thought was quite outstanding. The signature of the ‘Happy Diamonds’ collection is those floating, loose diamonds encased between metal and glass, giving the pieces a dynamic look.
We also saw a number of exquisite rings in May, many featuring side stones (#10) and pave bands (#s 6 and 7) which continue to be popular. But there is something to be said for the simplicity of a solitaire setting like the emerald-cut diamond ring in #2.
Of course, even when things do return to their regularly scheduled programming, you may feel that massive diamond stud earrings (#5) or a two-strand Riviera necklace (#3) don’t fit your style. Why not consider selling these items for something more worth your while? A new car or a few new handbags might do you better.
