Have you been hearing people tell you to focus on your mindset? Reading quotes reminding you to check in with your mindset? Have you been wondering what this all really even means and why it is important?

Mindset is the foundation for everything you choose to do and will be a key factor in determining your success. Whether it’s getting over heartbreak, creating a new business, or competing in a marathon, cultivating and tending to your mindset can be considered the most important piece of all that you do.

So, what exactly is mindset?

The definition of mindset is, the established set of attitudes held by someone. These established set of attitudes will set the stage for how you perceive the world, your beliefs in your ability to succeed, and the actions you are willing to take. Dedicating yourself to creating a powerful mindset that supports and serves you in pursuit of your goals and dreams is the equivalent to building your home with a strong foundation that supports and serves you in surviving the worst of storms.

Creating a mindset of growth begins with you deciding and committing to live from the highest version of yourself in everything you face and everything you do. The decision is not an easy one to execute, as taking the high road can truly be a lonely path to walk. Your dreams will be challenged, your truth will be shaken, and you will have to overcome obstacles strategically placed in your path. This is what the road to success looks like, and your mindset is what will allow you to traverse it all.

Once you have made the decision to live from the highest version of yourself, it becomes time for you to set yourself up for success. Creating a system of support by those who respect and honor your dreams, knowing what fills your soul and gives you strength in times of struggle, having a daily system or rituals that keep your mindset aligned with success, and being curious and willing to learn are things you can set up in your life to support your mindset of growth. There are also 4 very powerful questions you can ask yourself often as a way to help you gain a deeper understanding of what your mindset is and when you are in need of making adjustments.

4 Questions to Ask Yourself About Mindset

What is your attitude/feeling toward the situation?

Being successful does not mean that your life is going to be free of pain and failures or that you will never be disappointed or heartbroken again. If you are living life to its fullest, there will be ups and downs and you will continue to feel a wide range of emotions. It is important to understand that it is not what happens in your life that matters, what matters is what you believe about what happens. Creating a mindset of success means understanding that even the most painful moments are serving a purpose, and that life is happening for you instead of to you. Learning to reframe problems as opportunities will allow you to see the world through a different lens and set you up for success.

Where is your focus?

Where you are focused will determine what you see, what you do, and how far you are able to go. All day, every day, you have the opportunity to choose where you will place your focus and use it to create your success. Problem is though, where you focus is usually an unconscious process and is based in past patterns and beliefs that you haven’t thought to consider. Without even realizing it, you are limiting your potential by creating set points, obstacles, and impossibilities that don’t even exist.

Creating a mindset of success means getting conscious and intentional about where you are choosing to focus on throughout the day. When you create a habit of checking in with yourself, you are able to notice when you are focused on something that does not serve your goals and make conscious shifts toward a focus that does. Learning to be in awareness and make these adjustments will allow you to continue to expand and therefore succeed.

What choices are you making?

Although, the real question to be asked is whether you are even making choices at all. For the most part, if you stop and think about it, you see life as events that happen outside of you. You get caught up in the day to day routines of life, what others expect of you, and whatever is going on inside your head and end up reacting to experiences as they occur. Eventually, living in this way can feel out of control and disempowering.

Creating a mindset of success is understanding that you are in co-creation with life and therefore, there are choices you get to make as opportunities present themselves. Staying aware of your ability to choose and making the conscious effort to make choices that serve your goals will set you up for succeeding and obtaining your dreams.

How are you behaving?

The way you show up in the world, day to day and minute to minute, is a strong indicator of your mindset, and therefore your probability of you reaching your goals. The words you say, the actions you take, and the experiences you choose to engage in are indicators of how you show up to others and the world at large. Most of the time, you are not even thinking about this and behave in ways that are habitual to you, ways that feel comfortable, and are most likely limiting. We tend toward comfort and ease, even when it doesn’t serve us.

Creating a mindset of success means being conscious of your behaviors and attending to the details of how you speak and act, and what experiences you engage in. It means aligning your behavior with your goals and only behaving in ways that will foster your success. It means being willing to be uncomfortable and take risks so that you can shed the limiting mindset of your past. Being conscious about your behaviors and willing to make adjustments as needed will serve you on your road to success.
