No one likes to admit it but most of us at one time or another (including me) has been in a financial bind. Whether it is the result of a job loss, illness, or a divorce, when backed into a corner, our instinct is to do whatever it takes to get our bills paid, preserve our credit for the future, and live well. We may temporarily cut back on certain luxuries, supplement our income by taking on a second job, and sell possessions we no longer use, need or want anymore to accomplish our goals.

At Worthy, we recently conducted a survey asking six thought-provoking questions that include how you prioritize your spending as well as find extra cash when you need it most. We also entered those who participated in the survey to a pool where they could win one of ten yearly subscriptions to YouNeedABudget and the grand prize of $1,000 in seed money. Here is what we asked:

  1. Yoga lessons, credit card dues and your daughter is asking you to buy her a new outfit… Your inner reaction is:
  2. Eliminating debt and knowing what is good credit allows you to have the most options. What do you consider “good debt” that ultimately helps you live better?
  3. If your exemptions and withholdings are correct, your tax refund should be:
  4. The single most important investment I can make for retirement is to…
  5. If you are in a financial bind, what’s the smartest move to make?
  6. At the end of the year you have an extra $5,000 (way to go with your budgeting!). What do you do with that money?

Not only are the results in, but the news is also good! Out of the 4,824 who participated, approximately two-thirds of you may be categorized as what we describe as a “wealth guru,” meaning that you are financially savvy and know not only how to create a healthy financial picture but also maintain financial health during difficult times.

Nearly one-third of those we surveyed fell into our middle category, those we call a “financial whiz.” These individuals answered most of the questions correctly and may need only a refresher about how best to manage their finances when the going gets tough.
